FACTS ABOUT
RENAL CELL
CARCINOMA

Renal cell cancer (also called kidney cancer or renal adenocarcinoma) is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells are found in the lining of tubules (very small tubes) in the kidney.

RCC occurs 1 in 300,000 in children under 14, and is uncommon in adults younger than 45 years.

Because RCC is so rare in young children, there are no widely accepted treatment protocols.

The tumor can spread to the lungs, bones, liver, and lymph nodes.

Spring 2008

Logan Smith is a 9 year-old Cancer Fighter from Missoula, Montana.

On November 23, 2007, Logan was diagnosed with stage IV renal cell carcinoma. He underwent surgery to remove a 9-pound tumor, a kidney, and his lymph nodes.

In February 2008, during his 90 day check-up, it was discovered that the cancer had returned. The family was forced to leave their Missoula home in order to undergo cancer treatment at Seattle Children's Hospital.

Needless to say the effect of the move has been significant. Logan and his family were forced to leave their school, their friends, their pets, jobs, and life as they knew it... indefinitely.

Logan has a blog where he's documenting his battle and all of the experiences along the way. He would love it if you were to visit and leave him some comments.
